The charcuterie is laid out, the fireplace is lit, and it’s nearly time for the countdown to begin. You’re curled up around your laptop, friends gathered via Zoom for the most unconventional ball-drop of your lifetime. What’s in your hand? Scotch, with it’s warm and rich layers, every sip a little deeper down it’s regional path? A vodka martini, with its age-old tradition and foundation; so classy and sophisticated? Delicious bubbles in a sleek flute, raised in toast to one of the most nightmarish years to-date?
I must admit to a certain wistful sadness when I think about what this New Year’s would have looked like for me. My busy little bar-room, tucked into a corner in Camden, bitter temperatures outside driving smiling people through the door, to set the stage for the incoming year with me…ah, ‘tis not to be. Yet, I am looking forward to sharing the following recipes with all of you, and wishing you a banner year in 2021.
May we all put this one behind us, and move forward with kindness and levity. Please note that any variations are possible! The labels on most bottles will indicate tasting notes.
.75oz Buffalo Trace Bourbon
.25oz Hiram Walker’s Blackberry Brandy
Top with Baron de Seillac Cava
Add brandy and whiskey to mixing glass, stir with ice until chilled. Pour into a champagne flute and top with cava. Garnish with blackberries!
Oaxaca By Sea
1.5oz Reposado tequila of choice
5oz Montelobos Mezcal
.35oz Agave syrup
2 dashes Angostura Orange
1 heavy dash Angostura bitters
Add all ingredients to mixing glass, stirring for 30 seconds over ice. Strain to rocks glass containing a single large ice cube. Express orange peel over mixture, garnish with peel and luxardo cherry!
2oz Tito’s Handmade Vodka
.5oz Dolin Dry Vermouth
1 dash Angostura bitters
Add all ingredients to a mixing glass and stir for 30-45 seconds, continuously. Strain into a chilled martini or coup glass. Garnish with a cocktail olive, cocktail onion, or lemon twist.
Roy Has Been Robbed
2oz Monkey Shoulder Single Malt
1oz Carpano Antica sweet vermouth
1 dash Orange Angostura bitters
1 dash Cocoa Angostura bitters
Add all ingredients to a mixing glass, and mix continuously for 30 seconds. Strain to a chilled martini or coup glass, garnish with an expressed orange peel.
2oz Barren’s Harbor Gin
.75oz Dolin Dry Vermouth
.25oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
4 dashes Orange Angostura bitters
Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice, stir continuously for 30-45 seconds. Strain into a chilled martini or coup glass, garnish with a lemon twist and luxardo cherry!
There you have it. Though this year has been unpredictable at best, some things remain the same. A delicious cocktail shared with loved ones is still a timeless way to say “out with the old and in with the new”. Happiest of New Year’s to you all, and may 2021 be brighter than ever!
